Google docs formatted documents are nothing more than a very small file with some sort of hidden link to the actual online document. 

This is not a great solution for a lot of people. 

If they are a real google doc, spreadsheet or presentation then you need to export.

There are two types of file:
1. Ones you uploaded. Downloading them is as normal downloads go. You get the file in the format you uploaded in.

2. Google docs, spreadsheets etc. Maybe it happened after some update, but we can see the option to download the the file in MS Office format, Open Office format or in pdf format. Unfortunately and quite logically, you need to download in atleast one of the formats.
