Google play store is very safe. 82% of all smartphones sold are Android and use Google play (vs 17.7% for Iphone). Also Android OS is free so people can have affordable smartphones (vs hugely overpriced and profitable iPhones).

Given its market share and more open source nature to keep it affordable; there will naturally be malware attempts and while they get tackled and eliminated; there is a risk.
