How to Promote a Book in the Google Play Store? [Solved]

Google Play does  in fact sell a relatively small volume of books — for my company, it makes up less than 1% — both of copies sold and of revenue. That puts it well behind services like Amazon's Kindle Store, Apple's iBooks Store, B&N's Nook Store, etc.

Also, unlike Amazon, where the mechanisms for cross-promoting are fairly transparent — namely, a book with a better ranking is more likely to end up  in the "People who bought this also bought..." list for a book of the same genre — there's no obvious way to let Google Play readers know about your book on GP itself.

So I can't say that we spend a whole lot of energy specifically promoting sales there.

That said, there are a couple of things that you can do. Google Play does have a "sale" mechanism — it might be worth running your book at a discount for a period of time. (Again, the sales volume is so low that this may not be worth it.)

Also, on your own web page for a book you can link to the Google Play page — as well as the Amazon, iBooks, Nook, Kobo, Smashwords, etc. pages. We do this, even though we have an ecommerce setup that allows readers to buy directly from us. Readers tend to like to buy from the service they're used to, so providing such a link on your book's page on your site allows you to market once, driving traffic to your site (where you hopefully will encourage readers to check out any other titles you've got!), but allowing them to buy from whatever store they're most comfortable with — including Google Play... and yours.

Another way to promote a book in the Google Play store?

Google is a minor player in the ebook field at the moment. In part that may be due the publishing there being such a difficult process in the past. We suspect things will change though because getting your book visible at Google is a sure fire method of getting sales elsewhere. You’ll need to do normal book promotion with the google play links but in addition spend some time using Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) to get your book on the first page at Google for a keyword search.
